RC Modeling
RC Modeling
Model toys? Definitely "no"! I'm talking about radio-controlled airplanes. No ships, no cars, no model trains, no plastic models. This is the good, three-dimensional stuff (everything else is kind-of boring!).
RC modeling is one of my hobbies since the early 80s. Yes, that’s last century! I started with a little bit of free flight, but soon built my first radio-controlled gliders. From there I moved to 6-channel sports planes and further. At first I built from kits, later from plans and eventually from own designs. In the meantime, my spare time is limited, so I buy more ARF kits. But I still like to get my hands (and shop) dirty with balsa dust.
My first powered gliders and sports planes were using glow engines. Sometime in the early 90s I entered the field of electric flight. And here we’ve come a long way since then: While the first models were underpowered and heavy, you can easily go vertical now with powerful brushless motors and lightweight LiPo batteries. What a difference 25 years make!
So I’ve tried out all kings of planes, from hand-launch gliders to multi-engine scale planes, from 1 ft and 4 in wingspan all the way up to 14 ft. I’m just not the helicopter guy though...
I could write novels about this fascinating hobby, but there are enough good sites and books out there. Just enjoy a few photos in my Model Archive and don’t miss visiting my clubs’ websites:
LSCN and GMRC.
